Hertz Tower in Lake Charles to face demolition on Saturday
The tower has stood as a landmark since 1970.
The century-old structure was originally constructed in 1929 as the tallest building in Lake Charles. At that time, it was known as the Cities Service Building. The name change came in 1970, when Hertz Corporation acquired the property. Over the years, the tower has served various purposes, including office space, a radio station, and even a restaurant.
Later use and abandonment.
In 2008, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette bought the tower. Then in 2014, the university gifted the building to the city of Lake Charles. However, the city has not been able to find funding to convert the structure for a new purpose. In 2016, Hurricane Laura caused damage to the building. In 2021, demolition plans were announced due to continued deterioration.
Demolition plans announced
Safety concerns brought on by Hurricane Laura's damage, along with asbestos remediation, contributed to the city's decision to demolish the tower. The city secured a low-interest loan to cover the costs of demolition. With all obstacles cleared, the demolition of the Hertz Tower is set for Saturday, a century after its initial construction.
