After 30 Years Of Partnership

Sweden Becomes a NATO Member

After 30 Years of Partnership

Sweden has finally joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), after 30 years of close partnership.

The White House confirmed Sweden's membership on Thursday, March 7, 2024, after the Turkish parliament voted to approve the country's accession to the alliance. Sweden will now take its rightful place at NATO's table, with an equal say in shaping NATO policies.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson welcomed the news, saying that it marked a "historic day" for his country.

"Sweden has been a partner of NATO for many years, and we have always stood by the values of the alliance," Kristersson said. "Today, we are proud to join NATO as a full member, and we look forward to working with our allies to defend our shared values and interests."

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also welcomed Sweden's membership, saying that it would make the alliance "stronger and more secure."
