Texas Bobcats: A Tale of Two Subspecies
Unveiling the Desert and Texas Bobcats
In the vast expanse of the Lone Star State, two subspecies of bobcats roam the land, their similarities blurring the lines between them. The desert bobcat and the Texas bobcat, experts say, can only be distinguished by the keenest of eyes.
The Desert Bobcat: A Western Prowler
The desert bobcat, as its name suggests, makes its home in the western and northwestern regions of Texas. It is a medium-sized feline with a reddish-brown or grayish coat and distinctive tufts atop its ears. The fur on the sides of its head is noticeably longer than on the rest of its body.
The Texas Bobcat: A Statewide Wanderer
The Texas bobcat, on the other hand, has a wider distribution, ranging over the entirety of the state except for the western and northwestern areas. It shares many of the physical characteristics of its desert counterpart, including its size, coat color, and ear tufts.
