Trump Not Immune from Prosecution for Alleged Crimes
Former President Donald J. Trump was indicted on Tuesday in connection with his widespread efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The new indictment is part of an ongoing prosecution by Special Counsel Jack Smith and adds to the legal challenges facing Trump.
According to the indictment, Trump and a top aide engaged in a conspiracy to obstruct the certification of President Joe Biden's victory. They allegedly pressured state officials, attempted to interfere with Congress during the Electoral College vote count, and incited a mob to attack the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and characterized the investigation as a "witch hunt" politically motivated.
